An Electri-Cord Manufacturing Co. Service
RoHS screening is a process by which homogenous materials and component parts are subjected to a rigid testing regimen in order to
determine if any hazardous materials exceed the maximum allowed percentage.
In order to meet the requirements of the EU directive on RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances),
manufacturers and suppliers will need to be able to produce documentation that they have been diligent in monitoring the levels of
hazardous materials used in their products. Using random and ongoing testing results from an independent RoHS Screening service is
the most effective way to accomplish this. We take samples of your product and submit them to thorough laboratory testing using
state of the art XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy). With well trained and experienced staff, a controlled environment, and
thorough, confidential information, you will be prepared when asked for documentation of your testing program.
Typically, you would employ the services of a screening lab for two purposes. To verify that your suppliers are in conformance with
the directive, and to check that your product is clear before passing it down the chain.
The RoHS guidelines are unclear about the levels of "proof" needed, and are relying on a policy of "self-declaration". If your product does not pass muster, it would be pulled from the market. Think of the following scenario: A trusted supplier of solder certifies to you, the circuit board manufacturer, that his product meets or exceeds all requirements. You file the certificate, produce a million boards, and ship them out to the PC maker. If they are found to be in violation, who pays? This is why it is incumbent on you to have an independent lab verify that all your supplies are safe using random RoHS screening services, and also that your final product does not violate the restrictions.
If you manufacture or assemble any part of electrical or electronic equipment which will be exported to the European Union member countries, you will need some level of RoHS certification.
You may analyze everything that goes into your final product and conclude that all percentages fall below the maximum allowed.
If it were only that simple. The directive requires that EACH component by itself falls within the limits, not just the end product.
And each homogeneous material within that component is required to pass screening.
Think of the various raw materials that go into the making of even the smallest component on your circuit board. Each and every one
of these must independently pass the testing process.
Electri-Lab Screening Services is offering its state-of-the-art XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy) screening lab & certified technical staff to companies needing technical expertise with RoHS compliance (7/1/2006). Our RoHS screening services are thorough, affordable and available to anyone needing time sensitive RoHS compliance testing.
RoHS restrictions we sample include: Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyl (PBB) & Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether. (PBDE)
Screening Process: Samples are screened for elemental and structural composition using the latest XRF technology process. Registered readings for each screened element are compared to RoHS compliance tolerances and confidential results reported to you in a detailed results document.
Sample Submission: Samples should be at the raw material stage for best screening results. Call us with your specific RoHS sample screening requests and we will advise you of what we need to accurately screen your sample. Samples should have a uniform composition, examples are: solders, coatings, resins, or plating materials used in the manufacture of parts or components.
